Failed ‘Charter of Values’ inspires new play
By Morgan Lowrie
In the upcoming Geordie Productions’ play, Chloe’s Choice: the true but not entirely reasonable holiday fable of Chloe Rebecca Ramadan, age 9 4/5, the title character must embrace new holiday traditions after her divorced parents connect with partners of different religions.
Geordie hopes the play will teach kids about other cultures and encourage them to reflect on the things that bind and divide people – all in an entertaining, family-friendly package. After Chloe’s mother rediscovers her Jewish roots and turns away from Christmas, and her father begins dating a Nigerian Muslim woman, how will Chloe decide to celebrate the holidays? Although the play discusses serious issues, marketing director Heather McCuen says everything is done in a really lighthearted way, with a lot of humour.
The inspiration for the play was last year’s proposed Quebec Charter of Values, which would have redefined the boundaries of reasonable accommodation, and prevented some public sector employees from wearing or displaying religious symbols. “We really wanted to find a way to bring people of all ages, including children, in on the discussion surrounding the Charter of Values,” said McCuen. Geordie’s theme for the season is “Inspiring dialogue,” and McCuen said that this play fits perfectly.
The play was written by Marcus Youssef, developed with the help of Playwrights’ Workshop Montreal and is being produced by Geordie Productions..
It plays at the Centaur Theatre from Dec. 5 to 14 and is geared to kids 7 and up. Tickets are $14.50 for children, $16.50 for seniors and students, and $18.50 for adults.
