Geordie Productions presents Beethoven Lives Upstairs

MONTREAL, April 2011 – Geordie Productions is thrilled to premiere Beethoven Lives Upstairs, a stage adaptation of the award-winning Classical Kids’ compact disc. Beethoven Lives Upstairs will be presented as part of Geordie’s 30th Anniversary Mainstage season at Centaur Theatre from May 13 – 22, 2011.

The arrival of an eccentric boarder turns a young boy’s life upside down. Ludwig van Beethoven has moved in upstairs! At first Christoph resents their new tenant but slowly he comes to understand the genius of the man, the torment of his deafness and the beauty of his music.

A contemporary Canadian masterpiece, the original audio recording of Beethoven Lives Upstairs has claimed dozens of top music, educational, and parenting awards. It has gone multi-platinum, been translated and distributed around the world, and made into an Emmy award-winning film. Based on this highly acclaimed recording, Geordie Productions’ Beethoven Lives Upstairs introduces some of the composer’s most memorable works, including the Moonlight Sonata, Für Elise, and the great Fifth and Ninth Symphonies, in a beautiful and engaging play for the whole family.

“Dear Uncle, something terrible has happened. A madman has moved into our house.”

Set in Vienna early in the 1800’s, young Christoph (Lucinda Davis, The Madonna Painter, Centaur Theatre) reads aloud from the letter he has just sent his uncle (Quincy Armorer Peter Pan, Stratford Festival). As their correspondence unfolds, a myriad of characters (played by Eric Hausknost and Leni Parker) from their colourful letters appear onstage to offer glimpses into Mr. Beethoven’s (Alex McCooeye Nativity, National Arts Centre) eccentric habits in the year leading to the premiere of his famous Ninth Symphony.

Directed by Dean Patrick Fleming, Beethoven Lives Upstairs features set design by James Lavoie, costume design by Amy Keith, lighting design by Thomas Godefroid and sound design by Peter Cerone.

GEORDIE PRODUCTIONS is a professional theatre company presenting theatre for audiences of all ages in Montreal and across Eastern Canada for 30 years.
