For many children, extracurricular activities are beyond reach because of family financial constraints. But this fall, Geordie Theatre School was able to offer less fortunate kids a chance to engage in performing arts and train with professional artists.

With the help of the Evenko Foundation, six kids were able to take weekly acting classes. The classes are 90 minutes for kids age 6-12 and two hours for the teens and run for 12 weeks.

Jessica Abdallah, who has been the school’s director for six years, says she has seen first hand how the classes can benefit a child. “I’ve had the opportunity to see how theatre training and being involved in these classes really affects children in terms of giving them a place where they can be creative, stretch their imaginations, and can play and work with other kids.”

The classes involve theatre activities and games that teach the children how to play in a group. Kids learn anything from improvisation to creating fun voices for their own characters, and they all take part in a final play. “The kids have shown a lot of excitement about getting the chance to work with professionals in the theatre,” Abdallah says.

Six more children will be awarded a scholarship for the winter session, which runs from January to May. The deadline to apply is Jan. 13. For more information, visit geordie.ca.
