Geordie Productions is bringing back its rendition of Beethoven Lives Upstairs

To celebrate its 35th anniversary, Montreal-based theatre company Geordie Productions is bringing back its rendition of Beethoven Lives Upstairs, based on the original version by the music company Classical Kids.

The production explores the life and work of the legendary German composer Ludwig van Beethoven. In the story, Beethoven moves into an apartment building right above a young man named Christoph. Annoyed by the constant barrage of music and noise, Christoph begins writing letters to his uncle to express his frustration. The performance features dramatizations of these letters and builds towards Christoph’s realization that Beethoven, in spite of his hearing impairment, is brilliant and his Ninth Symphony is a masterpiece.

“This is a great way to introduce classical music to a whole new generation of kids,” said artistic director Dean Patrick Fleming. “It also shows that what we see at first isn’t necessarily the whole story, so we should be careful before we judge people.”

The production runs from April 29 until May 8, Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m. and Sundays at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m at Concordia University’s D.B. Clarke Theatre, 1455 de Maisonneuve Blvd. It is geared to kids 6 and up and admission costs $14.50 for children, $16.50 for students and seniors and $18.50 for adults.
