Land Acknowledgement

Geordie Theatre acknowledges the significant history and ongoing impacts of colonialism and the systematic efforts to erase Indigenous cultures and identities on the very lands where we gather and create, known as Tiohtià:ke. This is the traditional and unceded territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka Nation, a place of profound importance to many Indigenous nations, including the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, and Huron-Wendat. We honor their enduring connections to these lands and waters, acknowledging the resilience of Indigenous communities in confronting systemic injustices.

Our theatre’s name, “Geordie,” inspired by our founder Elsa Bolam who is from the Newcastle area of England, reflects a personal story of identity and belonging. It prompts us to consider the broader narratives of land, identity, and our collective history, including the urgent need to dismantle persistent stereotypes and share the truths of Indigenous peoples’ experiences as essential steps towards genuine reconciliation.

In alignment with this understanding, Geordie Theatre is dedicated to:

  • Educating ourselves and our audiences about the real histories and lived experiences of Indigenous peoples, challenging stereotypes and promoting a deeper understanding of the truths that must precede reconciliation.

  • Prioritizing the inclusion of Indigenous voices and stories in our programming, to reflect the diversity and richness of Indigenous cultures, thereby contributing to breaking down misconceptions and fostering respect.

  • Supporting initiatives that advocate for truth-sharing and the dismantling of stereotypes about Indigenous peoples, recognizing that these actions are critical in building a foundation for justice and reconciliation.

  • Encouraging our community to engage in open dialogue about our shared history and the importance of truth as the groundwork for reconciliation, emphasizing actions that each of us can take to contribute to this essential process.

We recommend engaging with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action as a comprehensive resource for understanding the steps necessary for moving forward together. This document will provide valuable insights into how you can play a part in this collective journey.

This acknowledgment is a commitment from Geordie Theatre to not only recognize the injustices of the past but to actively participate in creating a future where the rights, histories, and cultures of Indigenous peoples are acknowledged, respected, and celebrated.

Together, let’s embrace this commitment, understanding that through learning, dialogue, and action, we can contribute to a more just and equitable society for all who share this land.
