A word from Jimmy

As we embark on Geordie Theatre’s 43rd season, we are more committed than ever to inspiring our young audiences to believe in themselves and their unique abilities. We recognize the immense pressures that today’s young people face, from social media to climate concerns, to the polarization of the world around them. That’s why our programming this season centers on the idea that every individual, regardless of age or background, has something valuable to offer.

Our 2Play tour showcases the talents of two remarkable female playwrights, examining the complexities of the inner and outer critics in us all. In both Perfect Storm by Gillian Clark and the award-winning Instant by Erin Shields, our characters find out how far they will go in order to be seen or heard.

Our mainstage show in September, Other Worlds, celebrates neurodiverse voices and their incredible creativity. We are excited to bring Stephen Booth’s play to the stage at Maison Theatre as a part of our relationship with the epicenter of TYA in Quebec.

At Geordie Theatre, we strive to present these powerful stories in ways that engage and entertain our young audiences. Our fundamental belief is that theatre has the power to spark conversations and inspire change. And we are committed to ensuring that every child who walks through our doors knows that they are valued, respected, and celebrated for who they are in ways that make them laugh and think all at once.

Other Worlds celebrates their unique journeys to claim and strengthen their own self-identity, while working to make deeper connections with the outside world. A play about well-being, friendship and belonging, and the importance of community.

Perfect Storm

Perfect Storm is a story about the complexities of true friendship, and the ways it can support us to navigate our inner critic.

Max and Kelsey have been best friends since forever. Max, a perfectionist, is known at Tiddly Wink Elementary and Junior High School as “Perfect Girl”, and Kelsey, a bit of a wallflower, is known as “Perfect Girl’s best friend”. Their friendship is challenged in drama class, where their roles are reversed. Kelsey seems to be a budding star, whereas Max can’t even play a basic improv game. It is here that both girls start to recognize their inner competitive voices that can never be satisfied. They think that the only way to satisfy their voices is to be better than their friend and get the spotlight.

The tension culminates in a disastrous final play written by their drama teacher, whose dreams of Broadway never came to be.

Sitting amongst the wreckage of their ruined play, it is here that Max and Kelsey realise that the only thing getting in the way of their friendship, was themselves. They realize that the way to quiet their inner critic is to celebrate the success and specialness of their friend. It’s just that, sometimes, it is really hard to do.

The play is joyful, funny and with lots of chances for audience members to get to have their time in the spotlight!

Meredith wants to be a pop star. Jay wants to be a hockey star. Rosie just wants to help her father. Searching for fame in a world of instant communication drives all of them to make split-second choices that have lasting ramifications.

Written by Governor-General Award winner Erin Shields, Instant is a lightening-speed, multinarrative story about three teenagers who are trying to be heard in a world where it’s harder to reach the top if you don’t recognize who you really are.
